Best Apple Watch running apps for beginners in 2026

Run Team5 min read

We make Run, so read this with that in mind.

The best Apple Watch running app for a beginner depends on whether you need a plan. If you just want to record runs, Apple’s own Workout app is already on your watch and does it very well. If you want a beginner plan with run and walk cues on your wrist, Run adjusts the plan to how each run felt, None to Run offers an extra-gentle 12-week start, and C25K by Zen Labs follows a classic eight-week plan. Nike Run Club is the best free all-rounder, Strava the best for sharing, and Runna the best for big goals.

Which Apple Watch running apps are best for beginners?

Here’s how the main options compare on the watch.

Is Apple’s Workout app good enough for running?

Yes, for tracking, Apple’s Workout app is excellent and it’s already on your watch. Apple’s support pages describe Pacer (set a target pace and see if you’re ahead or behind), Race Route (race your last or best time on a route you run often), Track Detection for lap times on a running track, and a Heart Rate Zones view. It can show running form numbers such as stride length and ground contact time, and you can build a custom workout with a warm-up, work and recovery intervals, and a cool-down.

There’s also Workout Buddy, which talks to you during a run with motivation based on your fitness history. Apple says it needs Bluetooth headphones and an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone, and works in English or Spanish.

What it doesn’t do: Apple’s support pages don’t mention a training plan. You can build a walk-run interval workout yourself, but you’ll have to change it every week and decide when you’re ready to move on. That’s where a beginner app helps.

Run: best if you want the plan to adjust to you

Run is our app, built for people who have never run or are coming back. The Apple Watch app shows interval guidance on your wrist (when to run, when to walk) with live heart rate, so you don’t have to look at your phone. It needs the iPhone app and watchOS 8 or later.

The plan is a ladder of 19 levels. Level 1 is one minute of running and two minutes of walking, repeated up to seven times; level 12 is 25 minutes non-stop, the 5K goal. After each run you rate how tiring it was from 1 to 10. A very tiring run makes the next one lighter straight away; a good week moves you up. See the steps on our 5K plan. Run is iPhone and Apple Watch only, with no Android version.

Nike Run Club: best free all-rounder

Nike Run Club is free and syncs with Apple Watch. It’s best known for Guided Runs, where a Nike coach talks you through a run, and it has training plans including a 4-Week Get Started plan. Its listing says plans are available in some countries only, and guided runs in “select countries”. On an Apple Watch with a cellular plan, you can share your live location during a run. We compare it with Run in Run vs Nike Run Club.

Strava: best for sharing your runs

Strava has an Apple Watch app and records runs plus more than 50 other sport types. It’s best for posting runs to a feed, cheering on friends and joining challenges. Recording and the community are free; extras like suggested routes and segment leaderboards are part of the subscription. It doesn’t include a walk-run plan in the app itself.

Runna: best for big goals

Runna works with Apple Watch (and Garmin and COROS watches), and builds plans for everything from Couch to 5K to ultramarathons, with strength sessions. Its website says plans adapt to your performance. It’s a subscription after a 7-day free trial. It’s a great fit if you already know you want to run a half or full marathon one day.

None to Run and C25K: plans with cues on your wrist

None to Run has an Apple Watch app, and its App Store page says you can run phone-free and still get its cues and tracking. Its main plan takes 12 weeks to reach 25 minutes of non-stop running, three times a week. It’s a subscription after a 7-day free trial.

C25K by Zen Labs has an Apple Watch app and follows an eight-week plan, three days a week. It’s free to download with paid upgrades, and its listing says the first week is free.

How do I choose an Apple Watch running app?

Ask yourself these questions in order:

  1. Do you need a plan? No: use Apple’s Workout app. Yes: keep going.
  2. Have you struggled with plans before? Pick one that adjusts or lets you repeat easily: Run or None to Run.
  3. Do you want everything free? Nike Run Club.
  4. Is sharing with friends what keeps you going? Strava, perhaps alongside a plan app.
  5. Are you aiming for a half marathon or more? Runna.

Whatever you pick, use the watch to keep yourself slow, not fast. Easy running is how beginners get fitter without getting hurt; our heart rate zones calculator gives you a rough easy range, and our guide to how slow you should run explains the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a running app if I have an Apple Watch?

Not to track runs: the built-in Workout app records pace, distance and heart rate well. What it doesn’t give you is a ready-made beginner plan, so many new runners add an app that tells them when to run and when to walk.

Can I leave my iPhone at home and run with just my Apple Watch?

It depends on the app. Apple’s Workout app records runs on the watch, and None to Run says you can run phone-free with its cues. For other apps, check what their watch app can do on its own before leaving your phone behind.

Which heart rate should a beginner run at?

Don’t worry about numbers at first. Run at a pace where you can still talk in short sentences. If you’d like a rough guide, our heart rate zones calculator gives you an easy range to stay in.

Do these apps work on older Apple Watches?

Each app needs a minimum watchOS version. Run needs watchOS 8 or later; Nike Run Club, Strava, Runna and None to Run list watchOS 10 or later; C25K by Zen Labs lists watchOS 9 or later.
